Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 Day
There were some concerned skyward glances in the early hours of Saturday morning.
By the time the crowd flowed in through Doomben’s gates, the rain has disappeared, the seats were dry and patrons and staff breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 Day was always going to be special.
2007 winner and crowd favourite Takeover Target (pictured right, greeting a fan) returned to the track to greet his fans. Sporting his personalised saddle cloth and pricked ears, he was a big hit with racegoers of all ages, notably when he led the field onto the track for the Doomben 10,000.
This year it was a mare who stole the limelight, as Sydney’s Hot Danish took home the coveted Group One race, ahead of quality horses including Whobegotyou and Melito.
It was great to see the locals also doing well, with Eagle Farm trainer Robert Heathcote (pictured right with Sofie Formica, Jim Byrne and wife Vicki) recording two wins.
Local fashionista Laura Flynn and her beau Nicholas Papoutsis (pictured below right) took out the strongly contested Hardy Brothers Jewellers Fashions on the Field: Couples Category, bagging themselves some incredible prizes including his and hers Tag Huer watches and a trip to the Melbourne Cup.
Back on the track, The Cage’s Mascot Race was another crowd favourite, with the winning mascot securing $5,000 for their Charity. It went down to the line but it was the Royal Children’s Hospital ‘Caterpillar Man’ who won by a nose.
