Fashion tips from last year’s winner
Andrew Byrne: 2009 Myer Fashions on the Field Open Racewear Category Winner
What styles will we see for the Classic Stradbroke in June:
Classic is the word here. This means classic shapes and details. Suiting should really be two buttons on the front, single or double-vented at the back and an elegant cut trouser that isn't too flappy. Wear a good quality lace up shoe or boot, give them a good polish and please avoid slip-ons.
What colours should the guys look to incorporate into their outfits?
Avoid black it can be too harsh for daytime events. There really are no hard and fast rules regarding colour except to try and keep things simple.
Textured greys, and lighter navy's as well as checks such as Prince of Wales check are an easy way to incorporate some texture. Be careful of colours and skin complexion. Find a few colours that suit your colouring or complexion. Fresh colours under suits for races are always good but subtlety is the key. Don't try to incorporate too many colours.
Wearing a particular colour can pick up other colours in your in your outfit, just be aware of it.
Any patterns or fabrics we should look for?
The first rule I'd say is stay away from pinstripes. Most often you'll end up looking like you've just come from the boardroom or tried to recycle a work suit for the races.
Look for textured fabrics in grey or navy or a subtle check.
Try to avoid high contrast patterns or checks – as they can end up looking like you're heading to a fancy dress rather than a day at the races.
If you are wearing a bold patterned suit, make sure you go subtle with the shirt and tie. Things can start to look busy if you try to do too much.
The key to finishing any outfit is to accessorise, what are your tips for the men?
Try not to overdo it. The key is in the details. These include a nice watch or interesting pair of sunglasses. A white or subtle pocket square and a boutonnière, if you're game.
Some guys will try a hat, and the key here is to not do all of the above. Choose two or three well selected accessories.
Less is more!
What do you look for when selecting a hat to accompany an outfit?
Hats are tricky for men at the best of times, but our climate dictates that we really should wear one more often. Stay away from anything too casual or beachy. Raid your father or grandfather's wardrobe and look for something with a narrow brim.
Are there any 'don'ts' for the men, when putting their outfit together?
NO WHITE SHOES or safari suits
* They shouldn't be worn anywhere! Ever!
* Please match your belt with your shoes!
* No black shirts worn with light/bright coloured ties!
* Look in the mirror before you leave home!
Other tips or comments?
Personalise your outfit with a pair of checked or interesting socks, a vintage tie or small details such as a tie clip or tie bar. Keep it simple and 'own' the outfit. If you're feeling uncomfortable you'll look uncomfortable.
