Picking the right outfit, almost as hard as picking the right horse

When it comes to the fashion stakes at the Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival, the fashion conscious follow the season to master their trackside outfit and it's almost as tricky as picking the right horse.

Carnival Ambassador & stylish Seven Presenter, Sofie Formica, gives her advice for mastering the art of dressing for the Carnival.

"Dress for the season, which can be tricky for our mild winters, but stay away from exposing too much skin. It's a definite no-no.

"Closed toe shoes are more appropriate for Brisbane Racing Carnival dressing. And whilst our mild winter days can be warm, make sure you have a jacket or pashmina to combat that chill once the sun goes down.

"Millinery is a must to complete your elegant and feminine race day look. I like smaller hats such as pillboxes or cloche styles but a key trend for this season will also be the fedora. Structured styles with embellishments are also right on trend. Consider textures and fabrics when choosing your millinery for the Brisbane Racing Carnival. Stay away from the traditionally Spring styles made from straw and opt for things using heavier fabrics and felts.

"Accessories are key and help to individualise your look. They also help to ensure you're race day outfit is on trend seasonally.

"Be sure to invest in some good underwear and hosiery. It will add polish to your overall look and most importantly, ensure you're comfortable.

"Check your look from the behind. All too often, women focus on the front of their look without checking how it appears from the back," says Sofie.

Sofie Formica will attend each of the Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival events where stylemeisters can enter the various Fashions on the Field competitions.

This year marks the first of a new partnership between the BRC and David Jones. The agreement, which was announced in January this year, secures David Jones as the exclusive department store partner of the 2011 Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival.
