Over 100mls of rain fell in the last 24 hours, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of over 15,500 racegoers. The annual racing and music extravaganza that is Exhibition Wednesday Raceday, has become a right of passage for Brisbane’s Gen Y.

AAMI Stradbroke Day the best ever

Over 2,000 interstate and international visitors made up the 23,980 strong crowd, 20% more than the same day last year. Interstate stars such as Dariana, from the Bart Cummings stable shone in the Channel Seven QLD Derby, while the crowd cheered home local trainer Robert Heathcote’s Our Lukas in the XXXX Gold Handicap.

The future of Brisbane racing

The newly formed Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) today released the concept master plan for one of the biggest developments in Queensland’s history to be undertaken at both Doomben and Eagle Farm racecourses.

BRC Chairman Kevin Dixon said the 10 year $1.2 billion development would create thousands of jobs and ensure Brisbane has the country’s finest racing facilities.

“This is a red-letter day for Brisbane racing and for the entire Queensland economy,” Mr Dixon said.

“The scale of this project is immense and will be a much needed shot in the arm for the state’s confidence as the Global Financial Crisis continues.
