Race 2 12.27pm Watpac 2yo Handicap 1050m.

No.2 Desert Knight – (Heinrich/Rodgers) – 2nd (0.2L) 31/10 Doomben 1000m 2yo trial Good (TR N/A)

Jumped well in only a three horse field settling 2nd under a good grip off the fence 2 lengths away. Asked to improve before the turn, levelled up straight, livened up 200m in a sprint to the line was just outgunned by the stablemate (Injustice).

First start. 200K purchase by an American sire who was a 2 x Group 1 and 3 x Group 2 winner (1400-1700m) in his homeland, he is yet to sire any Stakes winners. Dam is an unraced Fastnet Rock mare, this will be only her second foal to race. Hard to rate his trial against only the two rivals run in slow time. Market our best guide.

No.3 Exactamente – (Heinrich/Rodgers) – 1st (4.0L) 31/10 Doomben 1000m 2yo trial Good (TR N/A)

Jumped well in only a three horse field and led by 12 lengths as both rivals wanted to do things wrong. Margin 6 lengths into the straight, only coasted down to the line.

First start. 70K purchase whose sire has produced Group 1 winner Dal Cielo as well as the 3 x Group 2 winner Saracino. Dam won 2 of her 16 starts, this will be her first foal to race. Similar to his stablemate above he only faced off against two rivals in the trial and they were not on their best behaviour. Market our best guide once again.

No.6 Animal Spirits – (Team Guy) – 1st (0.4L) 31/10 Gold Coast 1000m 2yo trial Good (TR 88)

Jumped ok, settled down 2nd off the fence a length from the leader. Closing the gap 500m, cornered called upon, levelled up 100m edged clear however pressured more than the 2nd placed runner (Blue Book).

First start. By the dual Group 1 winning local sire Spirit Of Boom whose stocks have hit the ground running in his first season. Dam won only the one of her 16 starts however was placed on a further 8 occasions and is closely related to smart multiple winners Tierqualo and Eminence Grise. Wore down last week’s winner Blue Book in the trial, has to be worth including on that performance.

Race 3 1.02pm Pullman Brisbane Airport Class 3 Plate 1050m.

No.5 Capital Connection – (T. Gollan) – 2nd (0.5L) 31/10 Doomben 1000m Class 2 trial Good (TR 95.5)

Jumped well, no rush early before moving up to settle 2nd off the fence 2 lengths away in the field of only four runners. Halved the margin approaching the turn, same straight, closed the margin without being asked for much however was held by the winner (Prue’s Angel) who wasn’t placed under any pressure.

Resuming (81 days). Lightly raced and shows plenty of promise. Bolted in his Maiden on debut here and ran into the smart Manias at his second start before winning again prior to being spelled. Held in the trial however likely to improve plenty with that under the belt. Definite winning chance.

No.8 Conniving – (M. Dunn) – 2nd (0.2L) 31/10 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Good (TR 89)

Jumped well, didn’t look to lead settling 2nd off the fence a length away bit keen. Margin slightly further into the straight, only coasted down to the line taking ground off the winner late all basically under her own steam.

Resuming (148 days). Has won fresh and holds a very consistent overall record. Signed off her last campaign with a placing followed by a victory in successive Highway races at Randwick. Prefer at 1200m and from a better draw however is definitely in the multiples mix.

No.12 Prue’s Angel – (T. Gollan) – 1st (0.5L) 31/10 Doomben 1000m Class 2 trial Good (TR 95.5)

Jumped well, went through to lead easily in the four horse field loping along 2 lengths clear. Margin halved before the turn, similar straight, challenged, held rival to the line and under slightly less pressure.

Resuming (134 days). Won her first 2 starts before drawing carpark gates and basically having no chance both runs before the break. Interestingly held off Capital Connection (also engaged this race) in the trial however once again draws poorly. That will make her task a tough one.

Race 4 1.37pm Accorhotels 3yo Fillies Handicap 1050m.

No.1 Dream Kisses – (S. O’Dea) – 3rd (1.8L) 14/11 Doomben 1000m Class 2 trial Good (TR 96)

Jumped ok no rush from the gate restraining back to last under a firm grip 8 lengths away. Similar turn, picked up ground early in the straight, urged briefly before eased last 100m or so continuing to make ground to the line, nice trial.

Resuming (127 days). Very consistent filly in her 2yo season registering a couple of solid wins amongst her 9 starts. Liked her trial where she did look to have more to offer in the straight, with Brad Stewart to pilot off the inside gate she can park handily before finishing off strongly at the business end of the race.

No.2 Initialize – (P. Duncan) – 5th (1.9L) 24/10 Sun Coast 850m Class 3 trial Heavy (TR N/A)

Jumped well, no rush parked 3rd fence under a good hold 2 lengths away. Plenty of room to come through into the straight quickly within a length, jock moved off the rail briefly 200m however at no stage did he place any pressure on this one who went to the line with plenty left in the tank.

Resuming (155 days). Quality type who has only raced fresh twice for a good 2nd (debut) and a dominant win against easier opposition in Maiden grade first up last campaign. Liked her trial where she had a lot more to offer and from an ideal draw here she’ll park in the first few. Can win.

No.3 Darktown Strutter – (K. Schweida) – 3rd (3.8L) 31/10 Doom 840m Class 2-6 trial Good (TR 107)

Jumped only just ok, no real harm done settling back last between runners in a very bunched field only 3 lengths off the lead. Moved through to quickly loom up 3 deep approaching the home turn, 2 lengths away straight under a grip, given a very easy time down to the line, asked for nothing.

Resuming (113 days). Speedy customer who bolted in her first two starts last prep before running into a Heavy track then drawing very wide both failures before spelling. Liked her trial which was run in very slick time however her wide draw in a race with good pace is a definite concern here. She’ll need luck early on.

No.7 Cool Mover – (Heinrich/Rodgers) – 1st (0.4L) 31/10 Gold Coast 1000m Mdn trial Good (TR 97)

Jumped well wide out, no hope of getting over however stuck to it settling a close up 3 wide 3rd less than a length away. Same into the straight taking over only coasting 200m, headed briefly before regaining the lead late all under no pressure.

Resuming (148 days). Bled at her last start when chased hard all the way to the line beating all bar the winner. Overall form a bit patchy however she’s certainly shown glimpses. Sat wide all the way in the trial yet still won without being pressured. Well worth including in exotics.

No.10 Laura’s Star – (D. Duryea) – 5th (2.6L) 13/11 Gold Coast 1000m Mdn-Class 1 trial Good (TR 90)

Jumped ok wide out, very keen early on being restrained back to 3rd last 5 lengths away. Brought widest into the straight running home ok, stuck to task soundly under only minimal urgings.

Resuming (148 days). Too speedy for her rivals on debut at Ipswich back in April before being well beaten in stronger metro races her only other two starts. Prefer to see her in something easier at this stage.

Race 5 2.17pm Catalina Sounds 3yo Colts & Geldings Handicap 1050m.

No.7 Triple Arrow – (Heinrich/Rodgers) – 4th (1.6L) 31/10 G Coast 1000m Class 2 trial Good (TR 99)

Jumped well, landed in front, didn’t push on though content to take a trail 3rd off the fence 2 lengths away. Similar into the straight slightly livened up, basically held ground given a fairly easy time of it.

Freshened (148 days). Not far away all 4 starts last campaign which included a win over Dazzling Red (won all 3 starts this prep) at the Gold Coast. Could run into the placings without surprising.

Race 7 3.32pm IBIS Brisbane Airport Class 6 Plate 1350m.

No.11 First Crush – (C. Munce) – 6th (5.9L) 14/11 Doomben 1000m Open trial Good (TR 106)

Jumped well off the inside gate, quickly drifted back though settling down 2nd last almost 8 lengths from the lead. Railed closer into the straight 5 lengths away, urged 200m, couldn’t make any further ground.

Freshened (129 days). Yet to win fresh and also yet to win under 1500m with his best form clearly over further than the 1350m of this race. Likely to find these far too slick unless we get rain, his chances would definitely improve on a wet surface.

Race 8 4.12pm RadioTAB Keith Noud Quality Handicap 1200m.

No.1 Most Important – (T. Gollan) – 2nd (0.2L) 31/10 Doomben 1000m Open trial Good (TR 112)

Jumped well, no rush balancing up 2nd off the fence 2 lengths from the lead. Slightly closer turn and into the straight called upon soon after, pushed along within a length 200 gap to 3rd, kept coming however just missed out and worth noting was pressured more than the winner (Colinelle).

Let up (57 days). Doubt there was a sprinter going any better than this one last spring/summer. He ran 3rd in this race before winning his next three starts in dominant fashion. Not sure what’s gone wrong so far this campaign as he didn’t fire a shot in Melbourne at his two starts. Trial was ok however I would have preferred to see him run past the winner. At possibly my own peril I’m going to pass on him today.

No.4 Col ‘n’ Lil – (T Edmonds) – Last of 8 (5.0L) 10/10 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Good (TR 100)

Jumped well, didn’t stay there allowed to drift back and park 3rd last just over 7 lengths from the leaders. Out to last before turn, same into the straight, held ground down to the line without being asked for any real effort (wore heavy shoes).

Resuming (162 days). Won the Weetwood at Toowoomba as a $41 shot first up last campaign then won again at Eagle Farm over the carnival (Group 3 Lord Mayors Cup). His trial wasn’t much however we know he can obviously pull out a run fresh, not hopeless in a very open race.

Race 9 4.48pm Redy2Go Benchmark 85 Handicap 1615m.

No.13 Bodega Negra – (B. Hill) – 3rd (3.8L) 13/11 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Good (TR 109)

Jumped well, took a trail settling down 3rd fence 2 lengths away. Livened up into the straight trying to get out and give chase to the leader/winner (Rudy), few solid cracks last 150m couldn’t close any ground.

Freshened (21 days). Very hard to catch this one and on his latest form he’ll have to lift significantly to figure in the finish.
