Sun and smiles at Exhibition Wednesday Raceday

Over 100mls of rain fell in the last 24 hours, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of over 15,500 racegoers. The annual racing and music extravaganza that is Exhibition Wednesday Raceday, has become a right of passage for Brisbane’s Gen Y.

The track was deemed a Heavy 10 and upgraded to a Heavy 9 after race 6. A true testament to the team at the BRC, the Eagle Farm course proper raced extremely well given the weather.

In the early hours of the morning, BRC staff worked to reshuffle the venue layout for racegoers comfort and safety. A number of areas were deemed unusable and the huge lineup of headline acts was moved indoors and undercover.

A very vocal crowd cheered on a jockeyless Gran Terino in Race 6, who left his jockey in the starting barriers after busting through the gates. Robert Heathcote’s Buffering went on to take out the Mirvac Hotels and Resorts handicap, with the majority of the syndicate there to share in the celebrations.

Thanks to Student Flights, Faith Wild and three friends are off on the trip of a lifetime to Thailand for seven nights. Punters were given an entry form when they placed a bet on course, with the Bet Your Way to Thailand promotion drawn after the final race.

The team from NOVA were on course to assist with the NOVA Jockey promotion. In each race punters were given the opportunity to spot the jockey sporting the NOVA boy and text in the horse’s number. Congratulations to Brandon Brown, Daniel Redmand, Marcus Simpson, Emma Harvey, Ashley Richards, Kelly Dickenson, Justin Bianco and Alistair Adams who all scored themselves a new flash Apple iPad.

Twelve racegoers also took home Apple iPods and Chalk Hotel vouchers, thanks to the ‘Bundy Wear Red to Win’ promotion.

The crowd were well behaved and everyone enjoyed what became a beautiful sunny Brisbane day at the races.

The race has just passed the winning post in the Brisbane Metropolitan premiership for jockeys, trainers and apprentices, and the winners awarded by the Brisbane Racing Club.

For the Jockey Premiership, after a slight lead, Stathi Katsidis was joined by Larry Cassidy both finishing with an equal 72 wins. As outlined for the premiership, if two contenders finish on the same number of season wins, the title will be shared.

The Trainer Premiership was taken out by Robert Heathcote, and Michael Helyer took out the Apprentice Premiership. This year the BRC has made the decision to ensure this year's winners are officially recognised for their accomplishments.

''It seems only fair there should be some recognition for the best performed trainer, jockey and apprentice and the BRC which conducts the vast majority of the races involved in the premiership race is delighted to offer the trophies,'' BRC chairman Kevin Dixon said yesterday.

''We will provide the trophies for the 2009-10 season which fittingly was the first under the BRC banner.''

The BRC will also continue the BRC Jockey Medal award in addition to the Metropolitan Premierships, where a panel of three judges allocate points on a 3-2-1 basis for the best ride at each Saturday and public holiday meeting conducted at Eagle Farm and Doomben.

Trainers still call the BRC home

Following the finalisation of applications to train at the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC), the BRC Board has today announced that all Eagle Farm and Doomben trainers who made application can be accommodated at Eagle Farm Racecourse.

The BRC undertook a review process, with the goal of reducing club expenses. A forecast saving of $200,000 was made, by consolidating training to Eagle Farm.

The BRC Board today considered all applications to train, along with additional suggestions, bred from a recent meeting between local trainers and the BRC Chief Executive, Stephen Ferguson.

Kevin Dixon, Chairman of the Brisbane Racing Club, said "We are very happy to be able to accommodate all of the applications to train at Eagle Farm. I congratulate the trainers on proposing some alternatives to current practices, allowing us to continue providing training facilities for all of our local trainers".

Areas to train and the ability to accommodate 'A' Trainers in the current raceday stalls, will allow us to provide training facilities for the additional horses at Eagle Farm. The tracks ability to handle the increased traffic was never a concern. The key issues are Workplace Health and Safety, tie up stalls and horse float movements.

Trainers will be categorised into 'A' and 'B', defining privileges such as training times and areas to train. The new permits will be in place from 1st August, with a transition period until 1st September, when Doomben will close for training. 'B' trainers will be accommodated in a separate area of the course, with full access to the training facilities.

Trainers have more reasons to smile, as they will only be required to pay fees for the number of horses they have in work, however this will be reviewed on a six monthly basis. Trainers not achieving an average of four horse in work over this time, will be reclassified as 'B' trainers.

Mr Dixon assured trainers that "The BRC will be working with our local trainers, to meet their requirements, ensuring a seamless transfer to Eagle Farm".

"Our main concern in meeting these demands is the BRC's ability to maintain Workplace Health and Safety standards. Some modifications are required to the current systems, to ensure everyone's safety and efficient use of our facilities." said Mr Dixon.

Mr Dixon stated that the BRC was very happy to achieve a positive solution for all.

Saturday, 10th of July saw our first birthday milestone, and together with Bmag and hundreds of Brisbane families we celebrated big!

Our first anniversary saw free rides and birthday cupcake decorating for the kids, quality racing with the running of the Queensland Cup, as well as some fabulous fashions and headwear around the track.

Bmag’s Best Hat Competition judged by top milliner Alexandra Harper, and there was some contention for the top prize. Taken out by Tara Brock of Everton Park (pictured right), Ms Brock received a $500 headpiece designed by Alexandra Harper.

Queensland’s only listed 3200m race, the Queensland Cup brought some quality staying power to the Eagle Farm track, eventually taken by Solid Billing.

At the track, in Queensland’s beautiful mild winter, with plenty of action for both racegoers and their children, the Brisbane Racing Club showed what makes for a great day out at the races. The BRC is ready to jump for another event packed year, so make sure you come along to check it out.

The Brisbane Racing Club is turning one

Queensland's leading metropolitan race club turns one this month and is celebrating with a huge birthday party at the track on Saturday July 10.

B Magazine Anniversary Raceday is the first feature event on the BRCs 2010/11 season calendar and promises to deliver a huge day for racegoers with two black-type races.

Boasting the $150,000 Queensland Cup, Queensland's only two-mile race, the racing action will supply plenty of spectacle. Nothing beats a 3200 metre contest and Cape Breton's victory from the tail of the field in 2009 certainly proved this notion. His jockey, gun apprentice Daniel Ganderton, steered the horse to an impressive big win in the last 100 metres of the race.

At this stage, it could be anyone's victory. History does suggest a good run in the Queensland Cup can lead to a spot in selections for Australia's most famous horse race, the Melbourne Cup, later in the year.

Sydney jockey, Ganderton, certainly stole the show at this big Brisbane racing event last year, also taking out the other feature race on the programme, the $75,000 Listed Ascot Handicap. The talented rider, aboard Battlefield, came charging home in the final stages of the race to defeat Wasted Emotions and Mitanni.

The anniversary day off-track entertainment promises to be just as exciting for the whole family with a host of birthday party activities planned including the zig zagging family favourite Cha Cha ride, kids can bob til they drop on the inflatable Jungle Jive or ride like a real jockey on the pony rides and everybody will love the G-force experience on the Miami Trip.

Brisbane band Velveteen will complete the day's off-track entertainment playing sets around the day's racing action.

Racegoers are encouraged to dig deep at the event and support the Wesley Research Institute who is the official charity beneficiary of the event.

The Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) is the result of a merger between the Queensland Turf Club and Brisbane Turf Club, finalized in July 2009.

The Club launched a $1.2 billion Concept Master Plan in April 2009 the aim of which is to make better use of redundant land to create a community oasis in the heart of Brisbane, together with ensuring the city has the country's finest racing facilities.

In March of this year, the Brisbane Racing Club acquired the Hamilton Bowls Club and at the beginning of this month relaunched the venue as the Brisbane Racing Sports & Social Club.

Construction of a polo field in the centre of Doomben Racecourse has begun and planning is underway for two polo events to be held later this year.

Future plans include a range of community, leisure and lifestyle enhancements to the Brisbane Racing precinct such as the introduction of a weekly fresh food market at Eagle Farm Racecourse and the development of surplus land surrounding Eagle Farm and Doomben to incorporate residential, retail, lifestyle and commercial facilities.

Plans also include construction of 400 architecturally designed stables and new or improved facilities at for patrons to enjoy at both racetracks.

Tickets to the B Magazine Anniversary Raceday are just $15 and kids under 18 can enter for free. B Magazine has an exclusive offer to readers with a $10 discount entry coupon in mag.

AAMI Stradbroke Day the best ever

Sparkling rays of Queensland sun pierced the crisp morning air. The public lawn was already 20 people deep. Wayne made his way up to the broadcast box to call his last Stradbroke Handicap.
It was still half an hour before the first, the air was thick with excitement and anticipation; this was going to be a very special day.

Since the opening day of the Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival five weeks ago, the bar has continued to be raised. Hailed as Queensland’s Crowning Glory, AAMI Stradbroke Day didn’t disappoint.

Over 2,000 interstate and international visitors made up the 23,980 strong crowd, 20% more than the same day last year. Interstate stars such as Dariana, from the Bart Cummings stable shone in the Channel Seven QLD Derby, while the crowd cheered home local trainer Robert Heathcote’s Our Lukas in the XXXX Gold Handicap.

Click here for all of the racing results

Other interstate visitors included the very glamorous Rebecca Twigley, who is the Myer Racing Ambassador. Rebecca joined a panel of experts to judge the Myer Fashions on the Field. There were around 20 very well dressed men and 70 glamorous ladies who competed for a swag of prizes.

From across the Tasman came a very special visitor. Rough Habit won 11 Group One races in Australia and New Zealand, with six of them recorded in Brisbane. His wins included the Queensland Derby, two Stradbroke Handicaps, and a record three Doomben Cups. It’s no surprise that Queenslander’s see ‘Roughie’ as one of our own and cheered him on as he led the AAMI Stradbroke field onto the track. The 23 year old then stretched his legs with an exhibition canter down the home straight.

The Unitab Bet of a Lifetime saw eight finalists take to the podium to select an envelope. Seven people won the opportunity to place a $1,000 bet and Mick Noonan from Clontarf won the opportunity to put $10,000 on the nose in the AAMI Stradbroke Handicap. Unfortunately for Mick and many other punters on Saturday, he backed Melito, who ran second to the 2009 winner, Black Piranha in what was a nail biting photo finish.

Many in the industry are claiming this was the best Brisbane (Winter) Racing Carnival ever, with quality horses on the track and many new initiatives invigorating both Doomben and Eagle Farm.

We invite your feedback on the 2010 Carnival. Please feel free to email your thoughts to marketing@brc.com.au
