Excavation nears completion for pedestrian tunnel

Thursday, 1 October 2015

Work is progressing well on the Eagle Farm tunnels and infield, with excavation of the pedestrian tunnel across the home straight almost complete. Excavation works on this tunnel section which will connect the infield entrance to the opening near the Tote Room is on track for completion by mid next week.

The concrete form work for this of tunnel will then commence, before this section of track is handed back to the BRC to allow the resumption of partial training and the installation of the grass surface for this final section of the home straight before Christmas. Once the drainage and sand profile surface has been completed, sprigs of the special Oakridge Kikuyu will be planted in the same manner as the rest of the course proper with approximately six months for this vital section of the home straight to establish before racing returns.

Meanwhile excavation for the major vehicle tunnel from Nudgee Road, under the 1000m section of track and through to the infield is also progressing well with major earthworks underway. Contractors have also made good progress on the installation of a new storm water culvert near the 1700m point of the track as part of the flood mitigation works. Weather permitting culvets and head walls should be completed in next 10 days
