Trial Form for Runners on Saturday 10 March 2018

Wednesday, 07 March 2018

The following runners engaged today at Doomben have recently trialled in the South East Queensland area. Below is an alphabetical listing and summary of the trial together with a comment on their chances today.

Cauthen’s Power – Race 3
Irish Optimism – Race 1
My Diamantine – Race 5
Niccanova – Race 5
Royal Hootenanny – Race 7
Sunny Victory – Race 8
Trezoro – Race 2

Race 1 12.17pm SKY Thoroughbred Central Open Handicap 2200m.
No.3 Irish Optimism – (C. Waller) – Last of 7 (3.20L) 1/3 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 97)
Jumped ok, went straight back to settle 3rd last fence although improving his position 5 lengths off the lead. Cornered closer saving ground, 3 lengths away 200m, held ground from there wasn’t asked for much effort at all.
Freshened (28 days). Ex UK galloper who has had the 7 starts for Chris Waller with one win to date scoring at Canterbury earlier in the year. Raced close to the pace at his first Brisbane start sticking to his guns well to beat all bar the winner Morendi who he again meets here. For the 0.75 length defeat that day the weight turnaround is 4kg in this one’s favour. Big chance to extract revenge!

Race 2 12.57pm Sofitel Brisbane Central 2yo Handicap 1350m.
No.10 Trezoro – (M. Webb) – 5th (6.45L) 2/1 Sunshine Coast 850m 2 & 3yo trial Soft (TR N/A)
Jumped ok, no rush content to drift back and settle second last spotting the leader at least 6 lengths start. Last into the straight, only pressured marginally passed one rival late.
Resuming (160 days). Only the one start to date when big odds at Toowoomba in the Pat O’Shea, although finished well back he did get his tongue over the bit suggesting we should forgive. Didn’t do much in the trial though which was over 2 months ago. Likely to need the outing today.

Race 3 2.32pm Paddyfest 2018 Class 6 Plate 1600m.
No.2 Cauthen’s Power – (L. Kelly) – 6th (6.50L) 1/3 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 97)
Missed the start almost a length settled back last not bustled at all 7 lengths from the lead. Still last into the straight, passed one rival late however given an easy time throughout. Freshened (28 days).
Finished well down the track at his only start this time in. Interestingly has won twice second up however will need to improve sharply to make it three here.

Race 5 2.47pm Hamilton Hotel Open Handicap 1350m.

No.2 Niccanova – (S. Tregea) – 5th (3.3L) 22/2 Toowoomba 925m Open trial Soft (TR 100)
Jumped well, no rush drifted back to settle 4th off the fence 3 lengths from the leader. No closer and just being niggled along into the straight, urged at times couldn’t pull back any of the margin in the run to the line. Resuming (273 days). Extremely talented galloper who won the Group 3 Fred Best before a very unlucky effort when clocking in 3rd after being held up in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas on Stradbroke Day. Can’t say I was wrapped in his trial however he is unbeaten first up (2 from 2) and has a decent weight advantage on his main rival (Fortensky) after the claim. Betting moves definitely our best guide, if he doesn’t blow out the gate he’ll very likely win.

No.4 My Diamantine – (B. Smith) – Last of 7 (5.55L) 20/2 Doomben 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 103)
Jumped ok, no rush as expected settling down second last just under 6 lengths off the lead. Cornered similar, basically held ground to the line given an easy time by jockey Larry Cassidy.
Resuming (140 days). Out and out stayer who has never won fresh and will find these way too nippy. Happy to wait for further down the track with her.

Race 7 4.12pm Events At BRC Benchmark 75 Handicap 1050m.
No.17e Royal Hootenanny – (C. Munce) – 1st (0.5L) 20/2 Doomben 840m Class 2-6 trial Soft (TR 113)
Jumped fast, bounded 2 lengths clear settling holding the same margin against the fence. Margin narrowed early straight, marginal urge 150 held rival to the line without being pushed out (wore heavy shoes).
Resuming (123 days). Yet to win fresh and drawn poorly however the trial was a definite positive winning in good time with the heavy shoes on. She has won on Soft and Heavy ground which is another positive in the likely wet conditions. Not the roughest should we lose a few runners due to scratchings on race morning.

Race 8 4.50pm Blokes Day Out Raceday No More Than One Metro Win Handicap 1200m.
No.1 Sunny Victory – (D. Duryea) – 2nd (2.25L) 16/1 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Good (TR 109)
Jumped well, no pressure early to settle a close up second middle of three up front. Similar to the turn, given the slip 2 lengths away into the straight leader extended, only coasted to the line though beating the rest easily. Freshened (182 days). Consistent sprinter who has raced twice fresh in the past for a debut victory and an unplaced effort however was found to be lame post-race on that occasion. Twice a winner on Soft ground his trial in good time was definitely good enough to be given a definite winning chance first up. Monitor betting leads closely.
