Wednesday, 21 February 2018

The following runners engaged today at Doomben have recently trialled in the South East Queensland area. Below is an alphabetical listing and summary of the trial together with a comment on their chances today.

Bold Endeavour – Race 5
Doubt Defying – Race 6
Hirtshals – Race 4
Karakabeel – Race 7
Punta Norte – Race 8
Ready For Danger – Races 4 & 9
Sakhee’s Soldier – Race 8
Simannka – Race 8
Trezoro – Race 3

Race 3 1.42pm Laser Clinics Toombul 2yo Handicap 1350m.
No.10 Trezoro – (M. Webb) – 5th (6.45L) 2/1 Sunshine Coast 850m 2 & 3yo trial Soft (TR N/A).
Jumped ok, no rush content to drift back and settle second last spotting the leader at least 6 lengths start. Last into the straight, only pressured marginally passed one rival late. Resuming (146 days). Only the one start to date when big odds at Toowoomba in the Pat O’Shea, although finished well back he did get his tongue over the bit suggesting worth forgiving. Didn’t do much in the trial though which was almost 2 months back. Likely to need the outing today.

Race 4 2.17pm Thyme2 Restaurant At Sofitel Brisbane Central Class 3 Plate 1110m.
No.4 Ready For Danger – (M. Dunn) – 2nd (0.2L) 6/2 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 100).
Jumped just ok, quickly recovered to go through and lead marginally off the fence. Joined and shaded before the turn, length away into the straight, livened up late hit the front immediately switched off being headed on the line. (Note-also accepted Race 9). Resuming (119 days). Won on debut before pulling up lame only other fresh run however note did win well second up. Nice soft trial and being by More Than Ready isn’t likely to have any issue in the wet ground. Definite chance.

No.14 Hirtshals – (B. Smith) – 1st (0.2L) 6/2 Doomben 840m Class 2 trial Soft (TR 102)
Jumped ok, going forward soon after found the front albeit marginally. Railed well into the straight. Coasting along inside the 200m wasn’t pressured at any stage to hold off close rival with a good margin to the rest. Resuming (231 days). Generally not a strong first up performer however the trial win was a good one having more to offer on the line running solid time in the process. Only the single win from 6 attempts on wet ground however it was an impressive one at Ipswich. One to keep on the safe side.

Race 5 2.57pm William Patrick Clarke Memorial 3yo Handicap 1350m.

No.8 Bold Endeavour – (G. Taylor) – 1st (1.25L) 30/1 Sun Coast 1270m Class 2-4 trial Soft (TR N/A)
Jumped well. Straight to a clear lead pulling his way along 2 lengths clear. Held a similar margin into the straight, cruising along 200m, never let down to score comfortably with plenty left in the tank. Resuming (105 days). On a dry surface I’d suggest he’d struggle against this opposition however with a wet track certain I wouldn’t rule him out as he’s won twice on Soft ground and placed twice on Heavy. Very easy trial win just coasting along all the way and is far from the roughest under the damp conditions.

Race 6 3.37pm Megapot Mile Class 6 Handicap 1640m.

No.3 Doubt Defying – (S. O’Dea) – 5th (5.15L) 20/2 Doomben 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 103)
Jumped well, no interest early on though drifting back to settle third last against the fence 5 lengths from the lead. Basically stayed in the same spot throughout given a very easy time by jockey Boris Thornton. Never asked for an effort at any stage. Freshened (28 days). Raced well this campaign with 2 wins from 4 starts including one here first up running down the very consistent I’m A Rippa. Trial was just a jog in the park to keep his fitness levels up, his sire produces many wet track winners and he has scored on Soft ground yet to see anything worse. Definite chance.

Race 7 4.17pm Prive249 Restaurant At Sofitel Brisbane Central Benchmark 70 Handicap 1350m.

No.3 Karakabeel – (T. Gollan) – 3rd (0.85L) 6/2 Doomben 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 108)
Jumped ok nice and handy early on before drifting back around midfield off the fence racing keenly 3 lengths from the lead. Improving between runners soon after cornered 2nd, urged only slightly battled well right to the line. Resuming (77 days). Raced very consistently last campaign when stepped up in distance placing 3 of his last 5 starts between 2000 and 2200m. Wins to date have been 1200 up to 1350m with all 4 coming either first or second up. Won on Soft, placed on Heavy ground and the trial was a tidy one in quick time. No surprise to see him right in the finish.

Race 8 5.57pm Blokes Day Out Raceday Open Handicap 1350m.

No.1 Sakhee’s Soldier – (S. O’Dea) – 3rd (0.7L) 20/2 Doomben 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 99)
Jumped ok, no rush at all settling down 4th off the fence around 3 lengths from the lead. Eased wider rounding the turn coasted up nearer the lead, just basically ambled (most did) down to the line untouched. Resuming (287 days). Ex Kiwi galloper who’s had the 5 Australian starts however this is the first for trainer Steven O’Dea. This is the easiest opposition he’s struck since arriving here and his wet track record is just as good as his dry. Very easy trial and is a definite market watch.

No.8 Punta Norte – (R. Heathcote) – 4th (0.95L) 6/2 Doomben 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 108)
Jumped well, led briefly before being content to take a trail 2 lengths away against the fence. Room to come through into the straight urged along soon after, held spot right to the line in a tight finish. Resuming (161 days). Rarely misses out on a win each campaign and was a second up winner last preparation. 3 wins on Soft ground yet to see anything worse and given a nice hit out in the trial. Likely to roll forward and is well worth including in exotics.

No.10 Simannka – (G. Newham) – Last of 6 (16.4L) 6/2 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 100)
Jumped ok, no rush settling down last spotting the leader 5 lengths start. Losing touch soon after though cornered 7 lengths behind the second last runner, things didn’t improve at all from then on. Resuming (512 days). Former Irish galloper who’s been off the scene for a long time. Thrashed in both her lead up trials however on the positive side is only lightly raced with a good record and has performed well on Soft ground back home. Suggest will need the run however keep an eye on the market moves to be safe.

Race 9 5.35pm Starlight Family Raceday No Metro Wins Handicap 1200m.

No.21e Ready For Danger – (M. Dunn) – 2nd (0.2L) 6/2 Gold Coast 1000m Open trial Soft (TR 100)
Jumped just ok, quickly recovered to go through and lead marginally off the fence. Joined and shaded before the turn, length away into the straight, livened up late hit the front immediately switched off being headed on the line. (Note-also accepted Race 4). Resuming (119 days). Won on debut before pulling up lame only other fresh run however note did win well second up. Nice soft trial and being by More Than Ready isn’t likely to have any issue in the wet ground. Definite chance.
