Vale Mick Mair

The Brisbane Racing Club is saddened by the passing of Group 1 winning Sunshine Coast trainer Mick Mair and extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.

BRC Chairman Neville Bell was a close friend of Mair’s, having raced horses with him dating back to the 21-times winner Latin Quarter some 25 years ago.

“Mick fought a brave battle for many years, yet would always manage a smile.,” Bell said.

“His positive outlook on life, no matter what the circumstances, was really inspirational. You could be down in the dumps, but talking to Mick, he would pick you up. And that remained the same right up until his passing.

“He’s one of those guys that make up the fabric of racing. He flew under the radar as far as training high profile horses – even though when he did get a good one, he handled them superbly. He was never really in the limelight, but people like Mick are what racing is really about.

“He’s going to be very sadly missed.”

Mick Mair had many highlights at Eagle Farm and Doomben with top class horses like Kidman’s Cove and Swiss Ace, but he achieved his career highlight when Swiss Ace won the 2009 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate under jockey Ken Pope.

Our thoughts are with Belinda and Mick’s entire family at this time.
