Widden Stud progeny sets sights on Eagle Farm

STALLIONS from Widden Stud, who sponsor a special race at Eagle Farm on Saturday, are strongly represented across the card, with progeny of those sires accounting for key chances in five of the nine races at headquarters.

Iolite (Bel Esprit) and Ashzaya (Star Witness) line up in the first race of the day, both looking to back up last start victories.

Iolite’s sire Bel Esprit is this year standing at Widden Victoria, the first year of the Thompson-family farm’s expansion into Victoria, having been based solely in the sanctuary of the Widden Valley since its establishment in 1867.

Race two is the Widden Basil Nolan Junior 2YO C&G Plate, where the farm’s pin-up stallion Zoustar is represented by the Kelly Schweida trained Roll Up.

In the fourth event on the card, consistent filly Glorious Ruby (Your Song) represents the Widden line of sires, as does the promising filly Fetch, who is a daughter of the farm’s late Golden Slipper winning stallion Sebring.

Widden also have a presence in the later races on the day with Lunasnit (Star Witness) lining up in the Listed XXXX Queensland Cup. A recent edition to the Barry Lockwood stable, the five-year-old mare is coming off a solid fourth in the Toowoomba Cup and is currently a $7.50 chance to claim her maiden black type victory.

Stuart Kendrick trained gelding Plenty (Zoustar) rounds out the Widden chances currently occupying the third line of betting in the Story Bridge Hotel Benchmark 80 Handicap.

It could be a big day at Caulfield for Zoustar, who has Lightsaber running for him in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas and the debut of exciting colt Brereton, which Widden sold for $1Million at this year’s Magic Millions Sale, making his debut in the Listed Debutant Stakes.
